What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth marks the day that enslaved African Americans were no longer under the hands of Texans. This federal holiday is meant to celebrate the freedom that African Americans gained that day, as well as bring light to the racism that African Americans still experience in modern-day history. On June 19th, 1865, Gordon Granger landed in Galveston, Texas, to announce to African Americans the news that the Civil War has ended in addition to their freedom being granted to them. Juneteenth embraces love, family, and culture altogether. Parades along with parties are thrown nationwide to commemorate the freedom that African Americans have today.
